The Air Force Aerobatic Team is part of the prestigious Équipe de Présentation de l'Armée de l'Air, composed as well of the illustrious Patrouille de France.
The EVAA flies the Extra 330, an airplane specially designed for top-level stunts.
The Coupe Icare is one of their favourite events to take part in due to the geographical conditions of the site and the warm reception and contact with the general public.
All EVAA pilots are former fighter pilots who hold the rank of Air Force captains. Every one of them has been at the controls of Mirage planes and undergone several years of training and participation in various missions for the Air Force.
Three mechanics are fully integrated in the team.
Every day of the Coupe Icare, while one pilot engages in the aerial programme, another will comment over a microphone on his evolutions for the benefit of the public and a third will be present on site to answer questions from spectators.
Although aerobatics by plane do not quite fit in the disciplines categorized as free flight or ultra-light air sports, their presence at the Coupe Icare is not only a great honour, but offers a magnificent air show in meteorological conditions that often pose problems for other disciplines more appropriate to the event.
EVAA Headquarters is in Salon de Provence, on base 401, that also houses the Air Force School for officers.
Every EVAA pilot flies approximately 150 hr/year, including 60 hours devoted to aerobatics, representing 120 to 150 flights (competition training, competing, demonstration training and demos). The other hours are for transfers, travel and other EVAA activities.
The full team participates in about 40 air shows a year in France and nearby countries, which means about 15-20 engagements per pilot.
The Patrouille de France covers the events further away because the planes are designed for speed and distance. During competitions on other continents, EVAA and all equipment are transferred by cargo planes.
