In 1983, 10 years after the launch of the "Coupe Icare" or ICARUS CUP, the FIRST INTERNATIONAL FREE FLIGHT AND AERIAL SPORTS FILM FESTIVAL hit the screens.
Today, “the ICARES of CINEMA” attracts an audience of nearly 20,000 people and has become a key venue for film and video professionals as well as free-flight enthusiasts.
The Festival brings together cinematic productions (short, medium and full-length features) dealing with air, flight, wind and all aerial sports : paragliding, hang gliding, sky diving, hot-air balloon, sailplane, elastic jump, base jump, kite, boomerang.... Motorized aerial sports are limited to paramotor, ultra-light hang-gliding and paragliding, model aircraft and aerobatics. Films concerning the bird flight are also accepted.
Every year the Festival receives from 60 to 80 amateur and professional productions from all over the world.
A selection of 25 to 30 films is then submitted to the festival jury, composed of film and video professionals (programme producers, film directors, etc.) and free flight specialists.
TIMETABLE OF PROJECTIONS
- Official sessions: Thursday and Friday at 7:30 pm.
- Saturday evening : Gala evening - Announcement of the winners and prize-giving ceremony and projection of the prized films.
During the day, there are non-stop projections of selected films.
All projections will be held under the Festival marquee set up at the South Launch.
« Mornings OFF » presents films that should not be overlooked neither by pilots nor the general public due to a true life experience well recounted, or to an interesting slant on free flight, or simply for precious footage.
The two sessions occur : Friday morning and Saturday morning.
"Carte Blanche" for the Kendal Mountain Festival (Great Britain)
This year, the Coupe Icare receive the Kendal Mountain Festival.
Steve Scott - Director fo Kendal Mountain Festival - will be present as jury member.
Steve Scott : “I’m especially delighted that we can bring our two amazing events together in this creative exchange – especially as we both share such a strong spirit of adventure. Kendal has become one of the world’s most respected Mountain Festivals and at the heart of KMF is our superb international film competition; so it’s a real honour to be invited to sit on the Coupe Icare film jury this year. We will also welcome the Coupe Icare team to Kendal where they will present their winning free-flight films ‘hot off the press’ at our annual Free-Flight session. I also have a strong personal connection with St Hilaire and the wonderful area as I learned to fly paragliders there with the excellent local school – Prévol, way back in the early 90’s. That was the start of many aerial adventures!”.
